Beginner's Guide

Everything you need to know to get started in Pokopia.

Welcome to Pokopia

In Pokopia, you play as a Ditto who transformed into a human. Your mission is to rebuild post-apocalyptic Kanto for the Pokémon left behind. There's no battling here — instead, it's all about creating habitats, working with specialties, crafting items, and restoring each biome to its former glory.

Every biome you explore tells a story of what Kanto once was, and your job is to bring that life back. Attract Pokémon by building the right habitats, learn new abilities from the friends you make, and watch as each area transforms from desolation to a thriving community.

Your first steps

You start your journey in the Withered Wasteland (formerly Fuchsia City) alongside Professor Tangrowth, your guide throughout the game. The Wasteland is a dried-out region where humidity is the key to restoration.

Two of your first friends will be Squirtle, who teaches you Water Gun, and Bulbasaur, who teaches you Leafage. These are your foundational tools — Water Gun lets you water terrain and raise humidity, while Leafage clears grass and moss.

From there, build your first habitats to attract more Pokémon. Each Pokémon you attract brings new specialties that help you restore the area further.

Water your plants regularly and use Water Gun on dry terrain to raise the Humidity level in Withered Wasteland. Higher humidity attracts more Pokémon!

Understanding habitats

There are 7 habitat types in Pokopia: Forest, Aquatic, Mountain, Urban, Cave, Sky, and Garden. Each type requires specific items and structures to build.

Place habitats in the right biome to attract matching Pokémon. For example, Forest habitats attract Grass and Bug types, while Aquatic habitats draw in Water-type Pokémon. The more diverse your habitats, the more species you can attract.

Check the full Habitats page for details on every type, required items, and example Pokémon.

Specialties

Every Pokémon has up to 2 specialties out of 31 total. Specialties are jobs that Pokémon perform to help restore Kanto:

  • Build — Constructs structures and buildings
  • Burn — Powers furnaces and smelts materials
  • Grow — Speeds up plant growth and farming
  • Water — Hydrates crops and raises humidity
  • Chop — Chops trees for lumber
  • Search — Finds hidden items and resources

Explore all 31 on the Specialties page to plan your team.

Ditto's moves

As a Ditto, you learn 14 moves throughout the game by befriending Pokémon who teach you new abilities. Your first moves are:

  • Water Gun (from Squirtle) — Waters terrain and crops
  • Leafage (from Bulbasaur) — Clears grass and moss
  • Cut (from Scyther) — Chops trees and wood
  • Rock Smash (from Hitmonchan) — Breaks through rocks

Later, you will unlock more powerful abilities like Surf (from Lapras), Glide (from Dragonite), and Waterfall (from Gyarados). See all 14 on the Moves page.

Some moves can be upgraded by cooking specific recipes. For example, cooking Soup increases Water Gun's range, and baking Bread lets Cut slice metal from a distance!

Trainer ranks

Complete Important Requests from NPCs to increase your Trainer Rank. There are four ranks:

  • Normal — Starting rank
  • Great — Unlocks access to new biomes
  • Ultra — Opens advanced areas and quests
  • Master — Full access to all of Pokopia

Each rank unlocks new biomes and features. Visit the Trainer Ranks page for full details.

Tips

Water your plants often! Plants grow faster with regular watering, and it raises the humidity in Withered Wasteland at the same time.
Throw parties and play music to raise Mood in Rocky Ridges. A higher Mood attracts Pokémon who prefer a lively atmosphere.
Check the time of day — some Pokémon only appear at specific times. Morning, Day, Evening, and Night each have unique spawns.
Visit Dream Islands daily for rare materials you cannot find anywhere else. These materials are essential for crafting late-game items.
Raise humidity by placing water sources and watering terrain. More humidity means more Pokémon in Withered Wasteland!
