Water system · Five types · Source-aware flow

Water mechanics

Water isn’t just aesthetic — it hydrates plants, puts out fires, powers waterwheels, and (for Lava) can hurt you. Here’s how the five types interact.

Generating water from vending machines

After completing Piplup’s request with Paldean Wooper in Bleak Beach, vending-machine drinks become infinite sources of water you can spit wherever you like. Each drink maps to a different water type.

Hold ZL to adjust placement height. Water must attach to something (a block or another water tile) to start a new flow. Hold Y and press ZR to suck nearby water back into Ditto.

The five water types

WaterDrinkBehaviour
Fresh WaterFresh WaterStandard water. Sparkling Ripples can appear. Hydrates plants.
Ocean WaterSoda PopSparkling sea water. Ripples cannot appear here.
Muddy WaterMoomoo Milk / CoffeeMurky. Ripples cannot appear. Does not hydrate the area.
Hot Spring WaterRoserade TeaWarm water. Pokémon may enter pools to relax. No ripples.
LavaChili SauceDoes not hydrate and damages Ditto on contact. Use Water Gun on lava to produce Black Rock.

Flow rules

  • Water placed above existing water will replace the lower water’s spread area. Remove the top water and the bottom reclaims the territory.
  • You cannot directly overwrite a water sourcewith a different type — only the flow.
  • Water along cliffs cascades down; plants below it receive hydration.
  • Lava along cliffs behaves the same but damages Ditto on contact. Water Gun on lava converts it into Black Rock.

Water level effects

  • Plants submerged in water stop growing until exposed again.
  • Fire is extinguished on contact with any non-Lava water.
  • Humidity rises when Fresh Water or Hot Spring Water is present in an area.
